NVLAP Asbestos Fiber Analysis laboratories
The National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), run by NIST, accredits laboratories that analyze asbestos with PLM and/or TEM. This page does not invent a lab table. The public directory is a search form; our fetch did not return rows without JavaScript. Use the official search, then confirm the lab code and expiration on the lab’s NVLAP page.
Use the official directory
Open NIST NVLAP Directory of Accredited Laboratories. Under Program, choose Asbestos Fiber Analysis. Under Country, choose United States (or another country). Press Search. Sort by city or state if the results table allows it. Click a lab name for the NVLAP lab code, address, phone if shown, accreditation scope, and expiration date.
What NVLAP accreditation covers
NIST: the Asbestos Fiber Analysis program “provides assurance that laboratories are competent to analyze asbestos samples using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and/or transmission electron microscopy (TEM).” The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), enacted in 1986, requires that laboratories that analyze asbestos samples taken from public or private elementary or secondary schools be accredited by NVLAP.
Proficiency testing is mandated and provided by RTI International — biannually for PLM and annually for TEM, per the NIST program page. Labs are assessed against ISO/IEC 17025. Source: NIST Asbestos Fiber Analysis LAP (updated 17 July 2026).
What we tried to fetch
- GET of the search form succeeded (HTML search UI, program option “Asbestos Fiber Analysis” =
programId=2). - POST to
event=directory.resultswith a session CSRF token returned an application error page, not a lab table. - GET of individual
event=directory.detail&labid=…pages without a valid CSRF token also returned an error page.
Because we could not retrieve a complete, current result set, this version lists zero NVLAP lab rows. Search-engine snippets of older detail pages are not a substitute for the live directory. Confirm every lab in the official search before you ship a sample.
Related official lab lists (not NVLAP)
Some cities license laboratories separately. The City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health publishes a 2026–2027 list of licensed asbestos laboratories (PDF released 29 July 2026). That is a city license to analyze samples taken in Philadelphia, not a NIST NVLAP table. We archived the PDF and did not transcribe it here because the text layer mixes laboratory firms with individual analysts. Official file:

After you have a lab report
If the report and an inspector who is not tied to a removal firm say the material should be repaired or removed, use a state or local licensed contractor list — not a ranked “best of” page. Live contractor pages: Kansas licensed contractors and Pennsylvania certified companies. When to test vs. when to hire.
