Pennsylvania: verify, don’t scrape

This page does not list sweep names. CSIA’s finder is the homeowner tool for CSIA credentials, and CSIA says that list is not for marketing. There is no statewide occupational license roster of chimney sweeps to transcribe here. Use the outbound links. Do not treat this page as a referral.

Pennsylvania does not issue a chimney-sweep occupational license. CSIA certification is a private credential. Separately, the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act (HICPA) requires contractors who perform at least $5,000 of home improvements in a year to register with the Office of Attorney General. Registration is not an exam and is not a CSIA equivalent. The Attorney General states that registration is not an endorsement, recommendation, or approval.

The public HIC search includes Chimney Sweep as a Type of Work. The search site itself notes that the Type of Work field is new and that data may be limited for many existing contractors. A missing Type of Work tag is not proof someone is unregistered. Search by business name or PA# as well.

Before you hire, read When to sweep a chimney.

Verify in this order

  1. CSIA certification (person) Look up the technician on CSIA’s public finder. Match name, credential, and expiration.
  2. Pennsylvania HIC registration (business) Search hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov. Confirm an active registration if the contractor is over the HICPA threshold. Helpline: 1-888-520-6680.
  3. Local rules Cities and townships may add contractor licensing on top of HICPA. Ask the municipal building office if you are unsure.
