Virginia: verify, don’t scrape
This page does not list sweep names. CSIA’s finder is the homeowner tool for CSIA credentials, and CSIA says that list is not for marketing. There is no statewide occupational license roster of chimney sweeps to transcribe here. Use the outbound links. Do not treat this page as a referral.
Virginia’s Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Board for Contractors licenses businesses that construct, remove, repair, or improve facilities on property owned by others. A contractor license has two parts: the class (A, B, or C), which tracks the dollar value of contracts, and the classification or specialty, which tracks the kind of work. There is no separate statewide “chimney sweep” occupational license and no official sweep-name PDF to transcribe.
Cleaning a flue may or may not fall under a DPOR contractor class depending on the contract and the specialty. Repair, lining, rebuilding, and similar home-improvement work more clearly does. Confirm with DPOR’s lookup for the firm you were quoted, and confirm CSIA (or NCSG / NFI) credentials for the person on the roof.
Before you hire, read When to sweep a chimney.
Verify in this order
- CSIA certification (person) CSIA’s public finder.
- Virginia contractor license (firm) DPOR License Lookup and the Board for Contractors page. DPOR notes that online data may lag the official file in Richmond.
- Local building departments may add permits for masonry or factory-built chimney work.
