About DIY Kit Index
DIY Kit Index is published by Shortell Designs. It compares consumer DIY test kits and exclusion products: charcoal vs continuous radon monitors, swab screen vs lab confirmation, mold kits that are not clearance, dryer-vent DIY vs hire, wildlife exclusion after vacancy, and why DIY asbestos sampling is discouraged. Drinking-water methods: home water filter methods compared.
Amazon Associates. As an Amazon Associate, Shortell Designs earns from qualifying purchases. Every Amazon product link on this site uses Special Links with tag radontestinde-20 and is marked (paid link). That disclosure also appears in the sitewide footer.
Sun Radon. The radon comparison page links to the Sun Radon lüft monitor through a Sun Radon affiliate link, marked (affiliate link). Shortell Designs may earn a commission from Sun Radon at no extra cost to you.
Methodology
- Verified ASINs only. Products are verified on live Amazon product pages before linking (HTTP 200, intended title). We do not invent ASINs or product names. Several topics reuse ASINs already on Shortell how-to pages; the water-filter page adds verified consumer filters for method examples only.
- Method comparison, not spam. Each topic page explains what the method measures, where it fails, and when DIY is the wrong tool — so the content meets Amazon’s original-content expectation.
- Official guidance first. EPA, HUD, NFPA, CSIA, and state wildlife rules are linked where they drive the advice. Consumer kits are screens or tools, not substitutes for certified inspections when those are required.
- No invented labs or contractors. This site does not fabricate laboratory names, license numbers, or phone directories.
What this site is not
- Not a contractor, inspector, or laboratory license directory.
- Not Exclusive Live Calls and not a paid referral call center.
- Not medical, legal, or real-estate advice.
- Not an endorsement by EPA, HUD, CSIA, NRPP, NRSB, or any state program.
For certified professionals, use the topic-specific Shortell indexes (radon testers, lead inspectors / NLLAP labs, mold assessors, chimney sweeps, wildlife operators) or the official EPA / state locator for your jurisdiction.
Side-hustle bookkeeping
If DIY testing or exclusion is part of a rental, flip, or other side-hustle property business next to a W-2 job, the tax-kit evergreen covers 1040-ES due dates — not tax advice. See 2026 quarterly estimated tax dates for W-2 + 1099 side hustles.
