DIY dryer-vent cleaning vs hire — and chimney inspection limits

Lint in a dryer exhaust duct is a fire risk. Creosote and damaged flues are a different system. This page separates what a flexible-rod kit can reach from when you should hire, and what a homeowner should not pretend a chimney “inspection” is. Not fire-code or insurance advice.

Dryer vents: lint kit vs hire

NFPA’s consumer guidance is to clean lint out of the vent pipe about once a year — or sooner if clothes take longer than usual to dry — and to keep the area around the dryer clear. Failure to clean is a leading factor in dryer-involved home fires in NFPA research summaries.

Situation DIY flexible-rod kit Hire (e.g. CSIA CDET)
Short, accessible duct you can see end-to-end Often enough for routine lint removal Optional; still useful if you want a camera check
Long run, crushed duct, roof/soffit termination you cannot see May leave lint beyond the rod reach Preferred — technician can inspect termination and airflow
Recurring overheating, burning smell, or slow dry times after cleaning Stop guessing Hire — may be duct design, not just lint

CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® (CDET®) is a separate credential from CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® (CCS®). A person may hold one, both, or neither. Verify on CSIA’s public finder. A clean lint screen does not mean the hidden duct is clear.

Chimneys: inspection limits for DIY

NFPA 211 defines levels of chimney inspection (typically described as Level I, II, III) that trained chimney professionals use. A homeowner looking up the flue with a flashlight is not a Level II camera inspection after a weather event, chimney fire, or before lighting an unused appliance. Do not “DIY sweep” with improvised weights if you cannot control what falls into the appliance or living space.

When to hire a credentialed sweep (and verify the card): annual check before heating season; after any chimney fire; before using a fireplace or stove that sat idle; after storms that may have shifted the chimney; when you smell smoke indoors or see damaged mortar/caps.

The lint kit is for dryer exhaust ducts you can reach — not chimney flues. The smoke/CO alarm is a life-safety device for the living space; it does not clean a duct or inspect a flue.

Stop DIY when the run is inaccessible or the dryer still runs hot

Lint kits help on short, reachable rigid runs; crushable foil and long hidden ducts are where fires and carbon-monoxide risk outrun a weekend project. Chimney cameras and flue work are a different trade — a dryer brush does not inspect a masonry flue. If the dryer still overheats after a clean, or you cannot see the full path outside, hire rather than forcing another pass.

Buy the lint kit only for a dryer exhaust you can see end-to-end after unplugging the dryer. Gloves and a flashlight help on the outdoor termination; they do not turn a dryer brush into a chimney Level II inspection. If the dryer still runs hot after a clean, or the duct is crushed / roof-terminated out of sight, hire a CSIA CDET (or equivalent) instead of ordering another rod set. Chimney flues stay a credentialed-sweep job.

Life safety · not a clean

First Alert SMCO210 smoke + CO alarm

Complements vent maintenance; does not clean a duct or inspect a flue. Follow placement rules. Honest limit: chimney inspection remains a CSIA/NFPA-trained sweep’s job.
