1. Pump

A registered hauler empties the tank

EPA: household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Frequency depends on tank size, household size, water use, and solids. How often, with citations.

2. Inspect

Inspection is a different job

EPA: in many states a septic system must be inspected when real estate transfers. Routine inspections should continue every 1 to 3 years. Pumping a tank is not a full inspection. Before you buy or sell.

3. Repair

Repair often needs a different license

In Ohio, installer, service provider, and septage hauler are separate local registrations. A backup or wet drainfield is not a DIY weekend. Warning signs, from EPA.

How-to (official sources)

How to use this directory: what to check before you hire

Know your schedule. EPA says an average household system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional, and household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems with float switches, pumps, or other mechanical parts generally need an inspection once a year. How often to pump depends on household size, total wastewater, solids, and tank size (EPA, How to Care for Your Septic System).

Know what the visit should include. EPA says the provider should inspect for leaks and examine the scum and sludge layers. Pump the tank if the bottom of the scum is within six inches of the outlet, the top of the sludge is within 12 inches of it, or sludge and scum are more than 25 percent of the liquid depth. The service report should note repairs and the tank's condition. Keep those records.

Hire from the official list. The state and county pages below copy who the licensing agency lists. Being listed is not an endorsement. Confirm the license with that agency before work starts, and ask your county what it requires where no page exists yet.

What this site will not do

We do not invent companies, phone numbers, license numbers, prices, or county pumping rules. If a field is not on the official list, it is marked unknown or omitted, and we link the official tool. We do not rank “best septic company.” There are no paid placements. Call links appear only where the official list already printed a number.
