Illinois labs
One path is independently verified for private wells: most Illinois local health departments can test for coliform bacteria and nitrate yearly, per the Illinois EPA Well Water Testing page. IEPA does not name individual health departments that accept drop-off — call your county first. The tables below list in-state IEPA primary chemical labs that look like commercial/for-hire analytical laboratories (document date 12/09/2025 in the official PDF filename) and in-state IDPH certified water microbiology labs marked Commercial or Health Department (Revision Date Thursday, December 4, 2025). Neither roster labels private-well acceptance for commercial rows — call before you collect water. Illinois State Water Survey’s HEAL no longer provides testing for individual households.
What we could and could not verify
- IEPA Well Water Testing (retrieved 10 September 2026): “Coliform bacteria and nitrates should be tested on a yearly basis and can be done by most local health departments.” Certified labs may be needed for certain chemicals. Individual LHD acceptance is not named — call first.
- IEPA chemical Primary Labs PDF (filename document date 12/09/2025): 15 in-state primary labs that appear to be commercial/for-hire analytical laboratories are tabulated. Wastewater plants, MWRDGC, city water purification, sanitation districts, Rock River Fabrication, AbbVie, American Water Central Lab, and health-department chemical rows are omitted from the chemical table. Secondary (out-of-state) chemical labs omitted — use the official IEPA Accredited Labs PDF.
- The chemical primary PDF does not flag Commercial. If a primary lab’s for-hire status was unclear, it was omitted rather than invented.
- IDPH Certified Water Microbiology Laboratories PDF (Revision Date Thursday, December 4, 2025): 15 in-state Commercial rows and 4 in-state Health Department rows tabulated. Out-of-state Commercial reciprocity rows omitted — use the official PDF. Municipal micro labs omitted.
- Health-department micro rows are still “unknown — call first” for private-well acceptance at that address; IEPA’s “most LHDs” statement is about the general LHD path, not a per-lab verification of these four.
- ISWS HEAL states it no longer provides testing services for individual households — not listed as a verified private-well lab.

Local health departments — coliform bacteria and nitrate

IEPA’s Well Water Testing page for private well users (retrieved 10 September 2026) states that coliform bacteria and nitrates should be tested on a yearly basis and can be done by most local health departments. The same page states certified labs also test well water and may be your only option for certain chemicals, and that you should consult your local health department about other contaminants and testing frequency. This is not a single state public health laboratory mail-in path. Call your LHD before you collect a sample — acceptance, kits, holding times, and fees are not named individually on the IEPA page. ISWS HEAL — not available for households
The Illinois State Water Survey Health & Environmental Applications Laboratory (HEAL) page states: “HEAL no longer provides testing services for individual households.” Do not treat ISWS/HEAL as a verified private-well lab. Source: ISWS HEAL.
