Maine labs
One laboratory is independently verified to accept private-well drinking-water samples: the Maine Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL) in Augusta. The other rows are in-state commercial drinking-water laboratories transcribed from Maine CDC’s commercial labs PDF dated 5/16/2026 — the same PDF Maine’s private-well page links as “Find a lab that is certified to test your well water.” We have not verified that those other labs currently accept private-well samples. Call before you collect water.
What we could and could not verify
- The commercial PDF lists 12 in-state laboratories with lab code, name, website, city, and telephone. Street addresses are not printed — address is unknown on every row.
- Specialty notes printed on the PDF (PFAS Only, Bacteria only) are kept in the Notes column. Labs are accredited by test; confirm current accreditation with the lab or the Laboratory Accreditation Officer at (207) 287-2070.
- Maine CDC’s private-well page and accreditation page both point well owners to this commercial PDF. Appearance on it is not an endorsement and is not, by itself, verification of homeowner sample acceptance.
- The PDF footer recommends checking bacteria holding times before mailing samples. Many laboratories offer statewide service — ask. Prices are intentionally omitted.
- A complete “All Accredited Laboratories” Excel file exists separately; this directory transcribes only the in-state commercial drinking-water list.
