Maryland labs
Two paths are independently verified for private well owners through official Maryland agencies: (1) your local health department submitting samples to the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) Laboratories Administration — Water Microbiology (private well sample reports are mailed to the submitting local health department; Well Water Testing Fees are published on MDH’s site); (2) MDE Be Well Wise guidance to test periodically at a state-certified drinking-water laboratory. The table below lists 22 in-state commercial laboratories from MDE’s Maryland’s Certified Drinking Water Laboratories PDF (Latest Revisions: 10/1/2026, retrieved 13 October 2026). Municipal/utility plant labs and out-of-state labs are omitted. About 350,000 Maryland households rely on private wells; private wells are not regulated like public systems. Call before you collect water. Test first.

- UMD Extension’s homeowner lab cull was last updated 2019 and is marked possibly outdated by Extension — not used to mark individual labs; current MDE PDF is the roster source.

The MDH Water Microbiology Laboratory analyzes potable and other water samples. Its public page states that private well sample reports are mailed to the submitting local health department. MDH also publishes a Well Water Testing Fees schedule (Bacteriology, Nitrate-Nitrate, Turbidity, Copper, Iron, Lead, Hardness, and other listed analytes). Start with your county health department to arrange bottles, drop-off, and submission. MDE states about 350,000 Maryland households rely on private wells and that owners are responsible for ensuring drinking-water safety. Have water tested periodically by a state-certified laboratory. At a minimum, sample annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH; also sample after changes in odor, taste, or appearance. Local health departments, University of Maryland Extension, and others can help identify local contaminant concerns. Water Well Construction Program: 410-537-3784. Call each lab on the certified list to confirm they will take your private-well sample, which analytes they offer, shipping instructions, and current fees.
