Virginia labs

One path is independently verified for private wells: the Virginia Household Water Quality Program (VAHWQP) runs low-cost drinking-water clinics through local Virginia Cooperative Extension offices (kit pickup, sample day, analysis at Virginia Tech during scheduled clinics). VDH states it does not test private wells. DCLS states it does not provide private-well testing for homeowners. The table below lists in-state laboratories that appear on both DCLS’s VELAP Chapter 46 commercial directory (list dated 7/1/2026) and the Drinking Water Certified Labs Excel (current as of 8/1/2026). Neither roster labels private-well acceptance — call before you collect water.

Virginia Household Water Quality Program (VAHWQP) — Extension drinking water clinics

VAHWQP (retrieved 11 September 2026) provides affordable, confidential water testing programs for private wells, springs, and cisterns through local Extension offices in around 70 Virginia counties each year. A clinic includes local kit pick-up, a sample collection day with local drop-off, sample transport to Virginia Tech for analysis, and results about 4–5 weeks later (sometimes with a local results meeting). Campus labs are not equipped to handle individual analysis requests outside scheduled clinics — contact your Extension office to express interest. VDH’s Private Well Water Testing page also points homeowners to VAHWQP clinics and to DCLS-listed commercial labs for containers and instructions. Confirm clinic dates, kit instructions, and current fees with your local Extension office before you collect a sample. Prices intentionally omitted from this directory.

DCLS — not available for private homeowners

The Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services Environmental FAQ states DCLS does not provide consultation on private well testing or testing for homeowners.
