Iowa labs
Three State Hygienic Laboratory locations are independently verified for private-well testing (Coralville, Lakeside, Ankeny). Iowa DNR’s Private Well Testing page also points well owners to county environmental health offices and the Private Well Grants Program for free testing of recommended analytes. The commercial table lists 11 in-state Commercial laboratories whose LabCert Program includes Drinking Water. LabCert does not say which commercial labs accept homeowner samples — call before you collect water.
What we could and could not verify
- LabCert generated 9/7/2026 was archived under
data/sources/ia-labcert-lablisting-2026-09-07.html. Only rows with Program including Drinking Water are considered for this page. - In-state Commercial Drinking Water labs: 11 tabulated. Out-of-state Commercial Drinking Water labs on the same roster are omitted — use the official LabCert listing.
- Municipal utility / water works / WWTP / WRF / regional water association labs are omitted even when they hold Drinking Water certification. Industrial/Private labs (including Iowa Soybean Association) and Nonpotable-only rows are omitted. “DNR (Test - Not a Lab)” is omitted.
- LabCert does not label private-well acceptance for commercial labs. Every commercial row is “unknown — call first.” Mail vs. drop-off is unknown.
- SHL is verified because DNR Well Testing and SHL’s request form both support private-well testing (coliform bacteria and nitrate kit). County health labs with Drinking Water are listed separately; acceptance at each address is unknown unless you call — DNR says counties can arrange testing via Private Well Grants.
- Analysis prices are intentionally omitted. DNR’s page lists Private Well Grants service funding amounts for shock chlorination, assessment, plugging, and reconstruction; those grant figures are not copied onto this page.
