One laboratory is independently verified to take private-well samples from homeowners: Penn State’s Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory. The other rows are commercial or independent laboratories transcribed from PA DEP’s drinking-water microbiology accreditation report dated 13 June 2024. We have not verified that those labs currently accept private-well samples. Call before you collect water.

What we could and could not verify

PA DEP’s water-testing page links to PDFs of labs that perform bacteriological and chemical testing. Direct HTTPS download of those PDFs from files.dep.state.pa.us failed with a TLS error from this build environment. WebFetch later retrieved the 13 June 2024 bacteriology report.
That report lists many municipal water-treatment-plant laboratories. Those were omitted here because this directory is for private well owners, and the report does not say those plants take homeowner samples.
Accreditation on this page is for drinking-water total coliform and/or E. coli. Metals, VOCs, and other chemicals are separate fields of accreditation. Use DEP’s search tool (matrix: Drinking Water) as Penn State Extension describes in Chain of Custody Water Testing (updated 29 May 2025).
Penn State Extension: be cautious of results from uncertified labs or from water-treatment salespeople. The Agricultural Analytical Services Lab does not provide chain-of-custody testing.

Penn State: the laboratory is accredited by PA DEP for drinking-water analysis. Drinking-water test kits are available at participating county Extension offices or directly from the lab (pre-addressed insulated mailer). Bacteria samples must reach the lab within 30 hours; ship Monday–Wednesday so the package does not sit over a weekend. Chain-of-custody is not offered here.
