South Dakota labs
One path is independently verified for private well owners: the South Dakota Department of Health Public Health Laboratory / Environmental Health Laboratory accepts private-person testing via kits from DOH or special locations (County Extension offices also distribute bottles). The table below lists 2 in-state commercial laboratories from DANR’s Laboratory Certification roster. The State Health Laboratory (Pierre) is documented only in the verified path below — not as a commercial row. Sioux Falls Public Health Laboratory is a municipal/public health lab documented separately. Out-of-state labs on the DANR page are omitted from the main table. Call before you collect water.
What we could and could not verify
- DANR Laboratory Certification page retrieved 15 September 2026 lists four in-state entries: South Dakota State Health Laboratory (Pierre), Sioux Falls Public Health Laboratory, Mid Continent Testing Laboratory (Rapid City), and American Engineering Testing (Sioux Falls), plus many out-of-state labs.
- Verified private-well path: SD DOH Environmental Health Laboratory — private persons get a testing kit from DOH or a special location; bottles also available from County Extension offices. State Health Lab appears on the DANR certified list.
- In-state commercial labs tabulated: 2 (Mid Continent; American Engineering Testing). Commercial private-well acceptance: unknown — call first.
- Sioux Falls Public Health Laboratory (municipal/public health; Microbiology on DANR list) documented in a short note below — not as a commercial row. Private-well acceptance unknown.
- All out-of-state labs on the DANR page omitted from the main table — use the official DANR Laboratory Certification page.
- Fee information exists on the DOH bottle-order page and the official Environmental Testing Fees page (content last updated September 14, 2026). This directory links those pages rather than republishing dollar amounts that may change. Confirm current fees with the lab.

DOH states: if you wish to test a water source through the Environmental Health Laboratory, you need to get a testing kit from the Department of Health or a special location. Once you have the kit, follow the instructions on the kit. DANR offers helpful information about private well testing.
The sample bottle order page states bottles include complete instructions for collecting and submitting water samples, that fee information for the various tests is included, and that sample bottles and instructions are also available from County Extension offices.
