Missouri labs
One path is independently verified for private wells: Missouri State Public Health Laboratory (SPHL) analyzes private drinking-water samples for bacteria and chemical panels when you get a collection kit through your local public health agency (or State District Health Office). DHSS states it does not offer testing for real estate transactions. The tables below list in-state laboratories marked Commercial=Yes on Missouri DNR’s certified chemical and microbiological Excel downloads (retrieved 8 September 2026). DNR does not say which commercial labs accept homeowner samples — call before you collect water.
What we could and could not verify
- DNR chemical Excel (retrieved 8 September 2026): 5 in-state rows with Commercial=Yes tabulated. Out-of-state Commercial labs omitted — use the official chemical list.
- DNR microbiological Excel (retrieved 8 September 2026): 41 in-state Commercial=Yes rows tabulated after excluding SPHL (cert 3), which is covered in the verified section. Out-of-state Commercial labs omitted — use the official microbiological list.
- Labs with Commercial=No (including many municipal utility-only labs) are omitted. DNR states laboratories listed as commercial do perform analyses for hire. Some Commercial=Yes names still look municipal, county, military, or water-company — kept as printed; private-well acceptance is still unknown.
- DNR’s certified-lab hub states analysis of private residences or private wells does not have to use a certified laboratory.
- Neither DNR list labels private-well acceptance for commercial rows. Every commercial row is “unknown — call first.” Mail vs. drop-off is unknown.
- SPHL is verified because DHSS Well Water Test Kit and SPHL bacteriological/chemical pages describe private drinking-water testing via LPHA kits. DHSS states it does not offer testing for real estate transactions.

DHSS Well Water Test Kit Information and Services (retrieved 8 September 2026) states the Missouri State Public Health Laboratory offers both bacteria and chemical private drinking water testing. SPHL’s bacteriological page states property owners may submit private-well samples in MSPHL collection kits available through local public health agencies or State District Health Offices, and that a $10 handling fee (check or money order only) must be included with the bacterial sample. Chemical testing pages describe New Well Series and Full Panel options and likewise point well owners to the LPHA for kits. DHSS offers private well testing as a public health service but does not offer testing for real estate transactions. Confirm kit instructions, holding times (bacterial samples must reach the lab and testing must start within 48 hours of collection per the SPHL bacteriological page), courier options, and current fees with your LPHA before you collect.
