South Carolina labs
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) Office of Environmental Laboratory Certification maps every commercial environmental lab it certifies in CELMapp. The table below lists all 24 in-state commercial labs that hold SCDES Safe Drinking Water Act certification, from CELMapp data refreshed 10/10/2026; 15 are certified for total coliform/E. coli and 7 for nitrate. SCDES does not say which labs take private-well samples or what they charge. Call before you collect water. Test first.

What we could and could not verify
- SCDES CELMapp laboratory records with Safe Drinking Water certification, read from the map’s public data service on 3 November 2026; every record carries a refresh date of 10/10/2026.
- Laboratories transcribed: 24 in-state commercial labs (name, address, SCDES permit number and phone as printed). GEL Laboratories holds two drinking-water permits at one address and is shown once. One lab has no phone in CELMapp; it is marked unknown.
- Omitted: 23 out-of-state lab listings that also hold SC drinking-water certification, and the FMU Freshwater Ecology Center (a public state university lab). Clean Water Act–only and hazardous-waste-only labs are not drinking-water certified and are not shown.
- “Coliform” and “Nitrate” columns come from the parameter list SCDES publishes for each lab’s drinking-water certification (TOTAL COLIFORM/E.COLI; NITRATE-NITROGEN or NITRATE-NITRITE). Category names are as SCDES prints them.
- SCDES says CELMapp listings are general and do not specify every method or analyte. Confirm with the lab, or email labcerthelp@des.sc.gov, that it is certified for the test you need.
- Private-well acceptance and prices for these commercial labs: unknown. Call first.
Testing a private well in South Carolina: the SCDES kit
SCDES publishes a Well Water Quality Testing Services page for residential well owners. Pick up a sample kit at your local SCDES Regional Office or health department. There are two kits: one for coliform bacteria and one for metals and minerals. SCDES accepts samples on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the invoice comes with your results. Don’t pay at drop-off.
- Coliform bacteria test: $20 per test (total coliform; if positive, the same sample is tested for E. coli). Results come by mail in two to three weeks.
- Metals and minerals analysis: $50 per test. SCDES says its lab is not accepting metals and minerals samples from June 1 to November 30, 2026; the December 1, 2026 restart date is tentative.
- SCDES offers one free coliform test and one free metals and minerals analysis a year to people over 65 or on public assistance (bring proof). New permitted residential wells may get the first coliform test at no extra charge.
- For volatile organics, herbicides, pesticides and other synthetic organics, SCDES says to use a commercial laboratory, such as one from the table below.
- SCDES says it does not regulate private-well water quality and recommends that these tests not be used for real-estate transactions. Questions: toll-free 1-888-761-5989.
